History

        The Siriraj Health Science Education Excellence Center (SHEE) began as the Medical Education Research and Development (MERD) project. The project was approved at Faculty Committee Meeting No. 22/2012 on December 4, 2012, with Associate Professor Dr. Cherdsak Iramaneerat appointed as the project manager. 

        Under Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital Order No. 1440/2013, dated July 10, 2013, the project was established under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Rungniran Praditsuwan, Deputy Dean for Undergraduate Education, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. In its first phase, the project focused on faculty development, teaching and learning process improvement, and educational research. Its office, equipment, and personnel were based in the Educational Quality Development Research Unit, Division of Medical Education, Education Department, on the 6th floor of the Adulyadej Vikrom Building. 

        In 2016, the Master of Science Program in Health Science Education was launched for health science personnel. 

        In 2017, online distance-learning courses were introduced. 

        On January 17, 2017, the Faculty approved the establishment of the “Siriraj Health Science Education Excellence Center” by resolution of Faculty Committee Meeting No. 1/2017. Initially, the center was under the Education Department and supervised by the Deputy Dean for Undergraduate Education. The center also offered the Master of Science Program in Health Science Education, a program of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. 

        The center’s operations focus on teaching and learning, research support, and academic services. It works with internal and external partners in education, research, and educational development in the health sciences. These activities support sustainable educational management and connect knowledge through collaboration with national and international academic networks. The center promotes the exchange of knowledge and educational experience, as well as research and educational development in the health sciences, in alignment with the strategies of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and Mahidol University. 

Performance or academic services

1. SHEE provides the Master of Science Program in Health Science Education to develop a new generation of personnel with knowledge of medical education. 
2. The center develops knowledge in medical education by offering short-term training courses for medical instructors, health science educators, and continuing education personnel. 
3. It provides knowledge, develops research and educational skills, and offers consultation on research and education for faculty and staff. These services promote and support educational research, helping faculty and personnel produce high-quality research that can be presented at academic conferences and published. 
4. SHEE encourages faculty and personnel at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, to conduct research and use research findings to improve teaching, learning, and assessment. 
5. The center also collaborates in medical education and academic activities with medical institutions both in Thailand and abroad. 
6. In addition, SHEE disseminates medical education knowledge through various formats, such as DVDs, e-learning, and online training. 

1. Health Science Education Development

                 SHEE is responsible for various short-term training courses for physicians, health science personnel, and health science educators. These include e-learning media, DVD training, SHEE Online Courses, online medical education training, tailor-made courses, customized training services, free elective courses for fourth-year medical students, teaching and learning activities for first-year residents, the “Effective Clinical Teaching” course, the SHEE Online Store, SHEE Academic Sharing, and the SHEE Journal. 

                 In the next phase, the center plans to offer international short-term training courses for physicians, health science personnel, and health science educators. 

2. Educational Research

                SHEE focuses on promoting and developing educational research in the health sciences to meet international standards. It also aims to advance knowledge in health science education so that it is suitable for the country and the region, supporting teaching development and national development. 

                 Faculty experts in health science education conduct research and serve as advisors for master’s students and, in the future, doctoral students. The center supports the presentation and publication of research at both national and international levels. 

3. Master’s Degree Program 

                  SHEE is responsible for the Master of Science Program in Health Science Education, including a special program for Thai students offered through blended learning, as well as an international master’s degree program. 

                  In the next phase, the center plans to develop a Ph.D. program.
